D’Angelo Lux and Niko Lemke to play football for UW-Whitewater this season

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team begins its 2019 season this week as it seeks an unprecedented 37th Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship.

Two team members have local ties:

  • D’Angelo Lux of Salem (Westosha Central High School), a senior majoring in Journalism. Lux appeared in eight games last season.
  • Niko Lemke of Salem (Westosha Central High School), a freshman majoring in Finance.

The Warhawks earned conference title No. 36 last season – the program’s 11th in the last 14 years – after completing a 10-0 regular season. The team reached the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Playoffs before falling at eventual national champion Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas) to finish the year with a 13-1 record.

UW-Whitewater is ranked fourth by D3football.com and is the favorite of WIAC coaches and athletic communications personnel to repeat as conference champion.

UW-Whitewater begins the new campaign Saturday, Sept. 7, by hosting Dubuque (Iowa) at 2 p.m. A free concert featuring national recording artist Jesse McCartney will take place across the street from Perkins Stadium starting at 12 p.m. The team will also honor its seniors on the field approximately 30 minutes prior to kickoff.
