Bus drivers that work for Dousman Transport Co. out of the terminal in Wilmot tuned up their skills with a day of training at the Salem Lakes Fire Station No. 1 in Trevor last week.
The bus drivers participated in a variety of training from classroom instruction to driving a course that tested skills such as parallel parking, driving through close quarters, how to properly approach and leave a stop and tight turning, explained Wilmot manager Mike Banwell. Other areas covered included blind spots, emergency evacuations and fire extinguisher practice.
At the bus evacuation station, Jessica Koltz refreshed drivers on a number of issues also covered with students at the annual bus evacuation drills such as eating isn’t allowed on the bus due to the possibility of food allergies or someone choking and that students need to sit bottom to bottom and back to back for safety.
Drivers also heard from officials at Trevor-Wilmot School and Salem School about programs at those schools.
Dousman handles bus transportation for Central High School, Wilmot Union High School, Bristol School, Salem School, Trevor-Wilmot School, Lakewood School and Riverview School.
Here is some video of some of the training (remember this the next time you think parking or turning your SUV is tough):
