2019 Kenosha County Fair pie auction coverage (PHOTOS)

John Tossava celebrates with the swine barn after he bid $3,900 for their offering in the battle of the barns.

The annual pie auction at the 2019 Kenosha County Fair took place Friday at the fairgrounds in Wilmot.

At this unique event, what’s up for auction are pies, baked goods and other packages put together by local individuals, groups and businesses. The beneficiary is the fair building fund. With that good cause at stake, the bids often get higher than you might expect for a cookie cake or a tractor themed blanket.

In one case Friday, the bids got a lot higher.

An annual feature of the auction is the battle of the barns. Each of the animal project barns prepares a basket or a collection of items. Each barn displays their offering at the same time in the Show & Sale arena and the bidding begins.

This year the bidding got hot fast. Ultimately John and Carla Tossava of CT Enterprises bid $3,900 for the privilege of picking the barn package they wanted. They picked the swine barn’s offering. They were swarmed by the swine project kids immediately after.

The auctioneer said it may have been the largest bid for a single basket ever.

Asked what motivated him to make the purchase, John Tossava, of Bristol, said “It’s for the kids. I’ve been blessed many times.”

Here are some more photos from the pie auction.
