Salem Lakes Fire/Rescue adds five firefighter paramedics; names James Lejcar assistant chief

Salem Lakes Fire/Rescue has hired five new firefighter paramedics and named an assistant chief.

The new hires were selected from a field of 19 qualified applicants.

The following individuals were approved and sworn in at the June 24 Salem Lakes Fire Commission as full time firefighter paramedics for the
village:

  • Nicholas Keller.
  • Nicholas Bonczkowski.
  • Mandalyn Herring.
  • Thomas Heebsh.
  • Shaun Ballenger.


Keller and Bonczkowski were part time members of the department and responded as firefighter paramedics.

Keller is a newly licensed paramedic who is a member of the Bristol Fire Department as a part time/paid on call member.

Bonczkowski is from Racine and was firefighter with the Union Grove Fire Department and works currently as a Critical Care Paramedic with Bell Ambulance in Milwaukee.

Herring is a paramedic firefighter that currently works for the City of Burlington Fire Department as a part time firefighter/EMT and part time paramedic with the Wind Lake Fire Department.

Heebsh is a paramedic firefighter serving as an Advanced EMT for the Tichigan Fire Department and as a paramedic firefighter with the Wind Lake Fire Department.

Ballenger brings in 20 plus years experience serving part time for the Pewaukee Fire Department and is currently a full time lieutenant paramedic with the Bristol Fire Department.

Additionally, the Fire Commission President Michael Blodgett swore in James Lejcar for the position of Assistant Chief. Lejcar was one of three internal candidates considered for promotion to this position.

Assistant Chief Lejcar has approximately 30 years’ experience in emergency services as a firefighter and paramedic.

“His vast experience in emergency medicine, fire suppression, his formal training and on the job experience both the public and private sector has provided a well-rounded skill set that will be important now and in the future endeavors of the department,” said Chief Mike Slover.

Slover also said, on behalf of the Salem Lakes Fire and Rescue Department, he is grateful for the opportunity to interview and assess highly qualified candidates, the department members who assisted with the
interview and assessment process, the Somers Fire Department Chief Carson Wilkinson and Captain Aaron Strom for conducting the physical agility test, support and guidance from the Salem Lakes Fire Commission and the Salem Lakes Village Board for continued support of providing funding and logistical support to ensure the Salem Lakes Fire Rescue Department continues to provide a high level of customer service and delivery of fire protection and emergency medical services for this community.
