Fox River on the rise

The Fox River is rising fast, but as of Tuesday afternoon it is forecast by the National Weather Service to fall short of reaching flood stage.

At 4:45 p.m., Monday, the river was at 8.36 feet as measured at the New Munster Gauge. At 3 p.m., Tuesday, the river had reached 9.2 feet.

Flood stage is 11 feet. The current NWS forecast calls for the river to crest at 10.4 feet early Friday morning. While that is short of official flood stage, that level may cause water to approach some homes along Highway W in Salem Lakes and Wheatland, says the NWS.

A 50 percent or greater chance of more rain is in the latest, local NWS forecast for Tuesday night, Wednesday and Thursday.
