Man charged in fatal Highway 50 crash

Timothy G. Vandervere, 40, of Beach Park, Illinois has been charged in connection with a crash on Highway 50 Friday, from which three members of the same Kenosha family died.

Vandervere was charged in Kenosha County Circuit Court Tuesday with:

  • Three counts of 1st degree reckless homicide.
  • Three counts of knowingly operating while revoked (cause death).
  • One count of reckless driving-cause great bodily harm.
  • Knowingly operating while revoked (cause great bodily harm)

A $2 million bond was set by Court Commissioner Loren Keating.

Vandervere was driving a pickup truck that struck the rear of an SUV in the eastbound lanes of Highway 50 in Salem Lakes Friday evening. The SUV was occupied by Vincent, Mary, Michael and Gerald Rizzo, who had been attending a fish boil at a New Munster church. Michael Rizzo was declared dead at the scene and Vincent and Mary Rizzo died in the hospital Saturday.

Investigators say Vandervere may have been traveling as fast as 100 mph when he struck the Rizzo’s vehicle, running it off the road and flipping it over.

Vandervere’s next appearance in court is scheduled to be April 18 for a preliminary hearing.
