Salem Lakes to stop mass mailing of newsletter; decrease frequency

The Salem Lakes Village Board has voted to stop mass mailing a paper copy of the village newsletter to residents after the next issue is published.

Instead, the village will have the newsletter available on its website and email an electronic copy to those who sign up for that option. If someone wants the newsletter mailed via the US Postal Service, they can request that service.

Village President Diann Tesar raised the topic of changing how the newsletter is distributed at the Dec. 10 Village Board meeting.

“It’s really costly to put out a newsletter,” Tesar said.

The village currently spends over $20,000 a year on its newsletter.

Village Treasurer Chris Lamb suggested decreasing the frequency of the newsletter to quarterly from six times a year. New content can sometimes be difficult to find for the more frequent publishing schedule, she said.

Tesar suggested putting out one more newsletter on paper, and announcing the switch in that publication as well as the future distribution options.

The vote to change the newsletter distribution was unanimous, with Trustee Dan Campion absent.
