Early results in the Paris clerk/treasurer referendum show residents favor moving forward with making the position appointed rather than elected.
At 8:11 p.m., with one of one poll reporting what may be incomplete results: Yes 497 (61%) to No 322 (39%).
Town Board members initiated the process of converting the position to appointed status this summer.
In October, Clerk/Treasurer Beverly McCumber resigned. The board appointed Diana Coughlin, who had been deputy clerk, to the clerk/treasurer position. Coughlin is a Paris resident.
The board said a key reason for pursuing the change was that an appointed clerk would not have to live in Paris, thus greatly expanding the pool of potential appointees.
UPDATE 10:11 p.m. — The above appear to be final unofficial results.
