Paris Town Board appoints new clerk/treasurer

The Paris Town Board has appointed Diana Coughlin as town clerk/treasurer.

The appointment was made by a unanimous vote of the board at the regular Town Board meeting Oct. 23.

Coughlin fills the vacancy left by the departure of Beverly McCumber, who recently resigned to take a new job. Coughlin has been serving as deputy clerk for over a year.

Board members were enthusiastic about promoting Coughlin to the post.

“We need someone to fill the vacant spot and I think Diana is the person to do it,” said Supervisor Ken Monson.

Said town Chairman Virgil Gentz; “She does a good job for the town.”

Currently, the clerk/treasurer post is an elected position. Coughlin is a Paris resident and could stand for election to the office. However, the board initiated the process of converting the position to an appointed one this summer. Paris residents will vote in a referendum on whether they favor the change on Nov. 6.

If the referendum approves the change, it would not go into effect until April, when McCumber’s term was to expire.

One advantage of having an appointed clerk/treasurer is the person would not have to be a resident of the town.

A similar effort to make the Paris clerk/treasurer appointed was attempted in 2002, but was defeated by the referendum,
