Paddock Lake renews contract with sheriff; shifts coverage hours

The Paddock Lake Village Board has renewed its contract with the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department for police coverage of the village including a rate increase and a change in coverage hours.

Cost for patrol during two daily shifts for 2019 will be $292,718 up 6.8 percent from 2018.

Another change will be the moving of patrols from second and third shift to first and second shift.

Village administrator Tim Popanda explained the change comes from feedback from residents and from municipal Judge Robert Brenner.

Among the advantages of the new patrol times according to a memo from staff to the board are: Patrol before and while students are waiting for buses on bus stops, patrol while most people are out of the village working and patrol when traffic is higher.

The chief disadvantage is an increase in cost because having first shift patrol means more senior deputies will be assigned to the village, the memo says.

Sheriff’s Department officials stress that deputies will still respond to calls from village residents at any time.
