A week of focusing on showing kindness to others at Central High School culminated in an assembly with an inspirational speaker, a three-point shot competition, a tug of war and recognition of supportive students and local businesses.

The assembly held at the end of the school day Friday capped off Dude, Be Nice week.

The assembly kicked off with a skit written and performed by students that addressed being nice to others.

Speaker Shane Lee, a 2006 CHS graduate, talked to students about the challenges and value of being nice. He illustrated the difficulty of taking back mean things by having two students see how quickly they could empty a toothpaste tube and then try — futilely — to refill it.

“Just a small gesture can make a huge difference,” said Lee, whose talk addressed the role of kindness in addressing school violence.

Some of the school’s state tournament boys basketball team competed in a three-point shooting contest. Select seniors and freshmen competed against sophomores and juniors in a tug of war.

Representatives of some local businesses were recognized for their support of CHS and the local community. Recognized were Robin Sarbacker and Erica Feeney of Paddock Lake and Twin Lakes Subway, Mindy Cooling of Mindy Cooling State Farm Insurance, Jason Arndt of the Westosha Report and Darren Hillock of West of the I (westofthei.com).

Students from each class also were recognized for exhibiting nice attributes. They were (by class):

Freshmen — Most positive attitude Faith Grams, stands up for others Collette Jolly, best smile Emily Wermeling, best shoulder to cry on Joey Sullivan, gives the best hugs Kenzie Ruth.

Sophomores — Most positive attitude Paul Lynch, stands up for others Grace Anderson, best smile Seth Bayles, best shoulder to cry on Kevin Keating, gives the best hugs Frank Bain.
