State to start reconstruction on Highway 45 in Racine County after Memorial Day

If construction on Highway 45 in Bristol wasn’t enough to get you down, here’s an announcement from WisDOT about more work to be done on Highway 45 in Racine County from the north side of Union Grove up to Highway 30 starting after Memorial Day:

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will begin a reconstruction project on US 45 from 7th Ave. to WIS 20, in Racine County. Work on this approximate 3.5 mile roadway involves removing the old roadway, grading the roadway and ditches, replacing culverts, paving a new roadway and replacing the signalized intersection at County C with a roundabout. The project is scheduled to last two construction seasons. Stage 1 will take place from just north of 7th Ave. (near Union Grove High School) to just north of Church Road. To complete this work, a full closure of the roadway is scheduled to begin Tuesday, May 30. During construction, this segment of US 45 and of County C at US 45 will be closed to through traffic but open to local traffic. Local traffic consists of vehicles with a destination, including a business that is within the closed section of roadway. Motorists wishing to bypass the construction are encouraged to use the official detour on WIS 75, accessing it by way of WIS 20 or WIS 11. As the closure of County C is limited to near US 45, motorists wishing to accessing businesses in that area are encouraged to use County C, rather than US 45, whenever possible. Later this spring to early summer, a smaller segment of US 45 near the high school will be closed to ALL traffic for complete removal of the roadway to replace a large culvert. This hard closure may last up to eight weeks. Stage 1 is scheduled to be completed in fall 2017. Work will cease over winter months at which time the road will be reopened. Stage 2 is scheduled to begin spring 2018, resulting in a full closure of US 45 from just north of Church Road to WIS 20. This roadway is anticipated to be reopened in fall 2018. The contractor Payne & Dolan, Inc. plans on completing the $9.6 million project in fall 2018. Please note that the schedule of work is weather dependent and subject to change.
As always, please use caution when driving through work zone. More information about the project can be found on 511 Wisconsin at
