State’s Highway 45 project to begin March 15; info open house in Bristol March 9

If you travel Highway 45 in Bristol the summer you may have been dreading is here.

A major reconstruction of the road from the state line north to Highway 50 will be undertaken by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation this construction season. Work is set to begin March 15.

Improvements for the road (from a WisDOT media release) include:

  • Resurfacing from IL/WI State Line to 86 th Street.
  • Reconstruction from 86 th Street to WIS 50.
  • Intersection improvements through project limits.
  • Realignment of US 45 and County JS Intersection.
  • Realignment of US 45 and South 196 th Avenue Intersection.
  • Traffic signal replacement at County A2/WG and County C intersections.
  • Addition of Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP) detection.
  • Sight distance improvement on vertical curves north of 86 th Street.
  • Bike/pedestrian accommodations added north of 86 th Street.
  • Expansion of shoulder for bike accommodations.
  • Addition of curb and gutter and sidewalk.

WisDOT says the initial work will address the southern project limits involving a full closure of Highway 45 from the state line to just north of Highway C. The northbound detour is as follows (beginning in Illinois): From US 45 take IL 173 eastbound to US 41. Go northbound on US 41 merging with I-94, to WIS 50. Go west on WIS 50 to reconnect with US 45. Southbound traffic would reverse the above sequence and directions.

This closure is scheduled to reopen mid-summer at which time the northern project limits will close, from just north of Highway C to Highway 50. Also this summer, the intersections at Highway WG and Highway C will each be closed for 14 days with additional detours in effect.

Built in 1946, with its last rehabilitation in 1995, this US 45 corridor is in poor condition and safety standards are in need of improvement, the WisDOT release said.  The contractor, Zignego Company, is planning on completing the $8.9 million project in late fall of 2017. The schedule of work is weather dependent and subject to change.

More information can be found on the project website at:

If you want to talk to someone about the project, there will be a open house meeting on Thursday, March 9, at the Bristol Municipal Building, 19801 83rd Street, from 4 to 5 p.m.  Representatives from WisDOT and Zignego Company will be available to discuss the project and address any questions or concerns

I am wondering what the people that live along this route will do to get to their homes. I live on George Lake and there is only 1 way in and 1 way out and that is on hwy 45, none of the postings are advising what the residents that live around the construction will need to do.
