The effort of Liam Barber, 18, of Twin Lakes, to attain the rank of Eagle Scout reached its conclusion last weekend.
But his parents, Patty Laverty and Jeff Barber, had a surprise in mind that they presented Liam with Thursday.
His parents had told Liam that if he attained Eagle rank they would buy him a car. But as the reality of completing the Eagle work drew closer, the car didn’t look likely, Laverty said.
But last week, his parents were able to get the car after all and they presented it to him as a surprise Thursday evening at the Twin Lakes Subway, where Liam works.
“He’s just so good,” Laverty said of her son, citing how he uses his wages to help with household and school expenses as an example.
On the night of the surprise, the Subway was pretty crowded as Randall School was holding a fundraiser that night, said Robyn Sarbacker, who owns the store along with her sister Erica Feeney. As the car surprise unfolded, Laverty had many eyes in the shop misting up as she talked about Liam.
“Everybody loves him here,” Sarbacker said of Liam. “He’s a good kid.”
Liam, of Twin Lakes and a student at Wilmot Union High School, is a member of Troop 329, for which Jeff Barber is assistant Scoutmaster. For his Eagle community service project, Liam built a path in a Wilmot cemetery to improve access. Liam’s inspiration to become Eagle came from his grandpa – Floyd Barber, Laverty said.

Congrats Liam! As proud parents of an Eagle Scout (also from 329!), we know how much time and hard work you AND your parents have put in to your endeavor!
I knew Liam as a small child, this doesn’t suprise me! He is a born leader and sweet sprited young man. God bless you Liam, I know you will do BIG things in your life! 🙂
Once again Congratulations to Liam on all his hard work and efforts that went into attaining the Rank of Eagle scout. He has been like another son to me since joining the troop in 2010 and I have enjoyed all of our conversations and work we have done together. Very Proud of this young man.
