Richard Bong State Recreation Area announces January programs

Richard Bong State Recreation Area has announces the following January programs:

  • Sunday, January 1 — First Day Hike.  State Parks across the nation host New Year’s Day hikes.  Join in the celebration to start your year off right and learn a little about the park too. Meet at the Visitor Center. 3-4pm
  • Saturday, January 7 — GO Cross-country Skiing!   Bring your skis and join instructor John Meyer to learn about waxing and many other skiing tips. The diagonal stride technique will be taught and practiced. Please call to pre-register (262) 878-5601.  **Program is weather dependent.  Meet at Shelter #1.    9-11am.
  • Thursday, January 12 — Knee-high Naturalist.  Bring your 3-5 year old to this fun and active nature program.  This month celebrate A SNOWY DAY!  Program will go on regardless of weather but topic may change.  Please call to pre-register or to cancel (262) 878-5601.   Meet at the Visitor Center. 10-11:30am.

  • Saturday, January 21 — GO Ice Fish!  Learn the basics of safe and effective ice fishing then try to catch a fish of your own!  Free fishing this weekend and some equipment provided.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.  **Program is weather dependent.  Meet at the Visitor Center but be prepared to drive.  10am-12pm. Owl Prowl. Join other for this annual event to discover why owls are the perfect night hunters.  Dress for the weather because participants will go outside to search for these predators.  Meet at the Visitor Center but be prepared to drive.   8:30-10pm.
  • Thursday, January 26 — Winter Birch Wreaths.  Join florist Joanne Leach from Tattered Leaf Designs to decorate a beautiful 30” birch wreath to brighten your winter door.  All  materials supplied.  Please pre-register. Fee is $30. (262) 878-5601. Meet at the Visitor Center.  6-8pm.
  • Saturday, January 28 — Woodpeckers in Winter.  Woodpeckers are wonderful!  Find out how to attract and identify them. Learn how perfectly adapted they are and why they don’t get headaches.  Bring binoculars because we’ll hike in search of woodpeckers too.  Meet at the Visitor Center.  10-11am.
