Silver Lake is going to get a Free Little Library and some bat houses courtesy of local Cub Scouts.

Sam Semke and Layne Gauger of Cub Scout Pack 328 told the Village Board of their Pack’s plans to construct and place the houses and library at Wednesday’s Village Board meeting.

The Scouts said Scouts will build the houses and library. They are planning to build one library and two bat houses. Locations under consideration for placement of the structures include Schmalfeldt Park and DeWitt Park and the trail through Silver Lake County Park.

The Scouts’ plan met with approval from the board.

“I think it’s a great idea,” said village President Bruce Nopenz. He also suggested that placing the library in Veterans Park downtown also be considered.

According to an organization that registers them, a Free Little Library is a “take a book, return a book free book exchange. They come in many shapes and sizes, but the most common version is a small wooden box of books. Anyone may take a book or bring a book to share”

People often build bat houses because bats eat a lot of mosquitoes.
