Collection day to change for half of village with new Twin Lakes garbage contract

Half of Twin Lakes will have a new garbage collection day under a new contract approved by the Village Board Monday.

Residents who now have garbage collection on Thursday will have collection on Wednesday when a contract with new garbage collection firm Groot Industries begins in January.

Residents who have collection on Tuesday will continue to have collection on that day.

On weeks with a Monday holiday, collection days will be Wednesday (for residences normally collected on Tuesday) and Thursdays (for residences normally collected on Wednesday).

Recycling collection will remain every other week.

Residents will see an increase of $4.84 for garbage collection and related services in the first year of the contract, said village administrator Jennifer Frederick.

The change in day allowed the village to continue to get collection of screenings from the waste water treatment plant for no extra charge, Frederick explained.

Garbage at village parks will continue to be picked up twice a week, but not on consecutive days like other collection, Frederick said.

While Groot would take over pickup the first week of January 2017, the company plans to deliver toters to residences the week before or the week of Christmas, Frederick said. The toters are a dark green, with the recycling totes having a contrasting color lid.

A Groot representative at Monday’s meeting said that the company is planning to distribute some educational material about the transition.
