Salem School fifth and sixth grade students were taught how quickly fire can spread in a presentation from Town of Salem Fire/Rescue that was part of Fire Prevention Week 2016.
The department set up a demonstration of a room that had a couch, bookcase, pillows, and items on the walls. As a fire started, the smoke detector sounded, and Capt. James Coppelman counted to three. During that short time the fire had spread significantly.
The students learned it is important to have a smoke detector, a plan for leaving the house and joining the family at a special meeting place.
