Paddock-Hooker Lakes Association considering bringing back boat parade

The Paddock-Hooker Lakes Association is considering reviving a Fourth of July holiday boat parade on Paddock Lake.

Scott Garland, association treasurer and a member of the board of directors, told the Paddock Lake Village Board of the group’s plans so far at a Village Board committee of the whole meeting Tuesday.

The group would like to have the parade on the same day as the Westosha Kiwanis Club fireworks display, Garland said. That has generally been on July 3, but this year was on July 2. There would be no theme and a dock decorating contest for those with piers but no boat might also be included. Starting time is projected for 6 p.m.

The group would charge a $10 entry fee and contribute any proceeds to the Kiwanis Club or some other charity, Garland said.

Garland said the group was interested in having the village aquatic weed harvester and the water patrol boats participate.

Village administrator Tim Popanda said the weed harvester would not be available due to safety concerns, but was otherwise favorable toward the parade.

“Sounds like a wonderful project,” Popanda said. Village President Terry Burns complemented the PHLA for working on getting the parade going so far in advance.

In answer to a question from Garland, Popanda said he would be willing to work out a way to waive launching fees for parade participants, but that a general waiver of fees for the day for all launchers would not be a good idea on what is generally the busiest day of the year on the lake.

Village officials asked Garland to get the group working with Kiwanis, which conducts the fireworks display, and Salem, whose public safety department patrols the lake, soon.
