The fire that destroyed a Trevor building housing a number of businesses Wednesday afternoon moved fast due to the type of things inside the building.

The warehouse-type building in the 28500 block of Highway C housed a lot of vehicles under repair and in storage and related products and that provided plenty of fuel for the fire, while firefighters struggled to get enough water on the flames to halt the fire’s progress, said Chief Mike Slover, Town of Salem Fire/Rescue. Firefighters cut holes in metal doors in an effort to get ahead of the spread of the fire.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene a little after 3 p.m. Smoke was visible from as far away as Salem Town Hall, Slover said. A MABAS box alarm was activated and upgraded two more times.

No occupants of the building were injured. One firefighter was transported to a local hospital for symptoms of exhaustion, Slover said.

Water tenders (tankers) from a number of area departments were refilling at the hydrant at Town of Salem Fire/Rescue Station #1 in Trevor, which is supplied by a water tower. Slover estimated that by about 6:30 p.m., about 200,000 gallons of water were drawn from the hydrant.

Slover said the county’s fire investigation unit is looking at the fire, but it is not believed to be of suspicious origin.

  1. Just asking says:

Is the fire department able to use lake water?

With the channel from camp lake just a few hundred feet away, closing off highway C and running hoses from the dam just east of the fire wasn’t done. Why?

    Again, just asking.

  2. 800 gallons a minute vs unk amount says:

800 gallons a minute vs unk amount from silted/weed water.
