National champions
Governor Scott Walker visited Wilmot Union High School Wednesday afternoon to congratulate the Academic Decathlon Team for winning the national title. The team competed in Anchorage, Alaska at the end of April.
Team members are: Carlie Banchi, Carl Simmons, Brenna Simmons, Joseph Burba, Alexa Lewis, Isaac Bruley, Angela Schumacher, Ashley Dabbs and Kyle Kostrova.
Walker presented a proclamation declaring it Wilmot Union High School Academic Decathlon Team Day in the State of Wisconsin. He presented each student with a copy of the proclamation.

“It couldn’t happen to a group of harder working kids. They put a lot of time and effort. I don’t know if we’ll be able to match that in a while because it takes a lot of dedication. It’s education. It’s proper that they get recognized for their championship like any sport. For him to come down here means a lot that he’s recognizing their hard work and effort pursuing knowledge” said Don Serkowski, social studies teacher who has been coaching them for 14 years.
The Wilmot team also won the national title last school year.

Carl Simmons and Carli Banchi
Carl Simmons has been the highest scorer the last two years in the state of Wisconsin. Both are the leading scorers in Div II. Banchi was third in the honors division, obtained three gold medals in science, essay and music and also garnered two bronze medals in art and social science. Additionally, Banchi accomplished a perfect score of 1,000 in the science competition.
