Statewide Republican primary results Tuesday gave Ted Cruz a decisive 14 percentage point victory over chief rival Donald Trump.

But the race between the two was much closer in Western Kenosha County, where Trump actually edged out Cruz by about 1.5 percent.

That margin was a little larger than Trump’s margin county wide, which was 1.08 percent.

Other facts:

  • Trump won in five of the nine Western Kenosha County municipalities: Salem, Randall, Paddock Lake, Silver Lake and Twin Lakes.
  • Cruz won three: Paris, Brighton and Wheatland.
  • Trump and Cruz tied in Bristol with 606 votes each.
  • Trump’s largest margin was in Silver Lake, where he captured 50.1 percent of the vote.
  • Cruz’s largest margin was 48.9 percent, in Paris.

Kenosha County was the only county Trump won in the southeastern third of the state. So what lead to this uncharacteristic result? We know there are a lot of Bears and Cubs fans in Western Kenosha County due to its proximity and connection to Illinois. Trump prevailed in Lake County and statewide in the Illinois GOP primary as well. Is this another example of Illinois influence?
