Salem Town Board recognizes Wilmot UHS academic decathlon team for 2016 state title

The Salem Town Board on Monday presented representatives of the Wilmot High School academic decathlon team team with a proclamation recognizing their 2015-16 season, which recently included a state title.

The team is moving on to nationals in Alaska next month. The Wilmot team is the defending national champion in their division.

The proclamation reads as follows:

WHEREAS, the Wilmot High School Academic Decathlon team, consisting of Brenna Simmons, Ashley Dabbs, Angela Schumacher, Alexa Lewis, Carl Simmons, Joey Burba, Kyle Kostrova, Isaac Bruley and Carlie Banchi and coach Don Serkowski, have competed and captured their third consecutive state Academic Decathlon; and

WHEREAS, the Panther Decathletes team entered the state competition trailing by 156 points in the rankings of a possible 60,000 points; and

WHEREAS, the Panther’s Decathletes, whose team accounted for a total of 42 medals, had all nine members of the team take home at least one medal, a first for the team; and

WHEREAS, the nine member championship team is seeking a repeat of last year’s national performance where they captured the Division 2 title in Garden Grove, California; and

NOW, THEREFORE, the Salem Town Board, consisting of Salem Town Chairman Diann Tesar, and Salem Town Supervisors Dennis Zaber, Dan Campion, Ted Kmiec and Mike Culat, do hereby recognize the Wilmot Union High School Academic Decathlon state champions for their team’s achievement and wish them continued success and support as they defend their Division 2 national championship title in Anchorage, Alaska in April 2016.
