The Wilmot Union High School Academic Decathlon won its third straight state title this wekend.
The team now advances to the National Finals in Anchorage, Alaska, to be held at the end of April.
Among this weekend’s highlights supplied by Coach Don Serkowski:
- Wilmot’s Carl Simmons was the leading scorer in the entire state for the second consecutive year, earning him an individual star-shaped trophy and a $200 cash scholarship.
- The team broke the state record on the Lang & Lit exam that had stood since 1989.
- Carlie Banchi, third in state in the honors division, and Joey Burba set state records on the Science exam, each posting a perfect 1,000.
- Joey also led all scholastic division decathletes in the state for the second straight year.
- Angela Schumacher, who led all varsity division decathletes in the state, and Kyle Kostrova, who was third among all varsities, joined the aforementioned on the all-state team. This was the first time a majority of the all-state team was populated with Wilmot decathletes.
- Isaac Bruley improved the most on the team since the previous competition and finished 5th in state in his division as did Ashley Dabbs in hers.
- Brenna Simmons and Alexa Lewis also had strong showings and nabbed several individual medals
- In all, Wilmot decathletes led all schools taking forty-two individual medals in the 10-event contest.
