The Salem Town Board set the same slow no wake hours for all lakes within its jurisdiction that have motorized boating.

The new slow no wake hours will be sunset to 10 a.m.

The measure passed 4 to 1, with Supervisor Dennis Faber voting against. Faber was not opposed to universal slow no wake, but instead wanted to set a specific time for the start instead of the more difficult to determine standard of sunset. Sunset will be more difficult to enforce, he said.

Chairman Diann Tesar said having different slow no wake hours for each lake has been problematic.

“It’s just too difficult for all of the lakes to be at different levels of hours,” Tesar said.

Salem’s new universal rule is a little more restrictive than the state’s standard of slow no wake from sunset to sunrise.

The measure passed without discussion from other board members of comments being heard from the audience. There were more than 60 people in attendance at the regular Town Board meeting.
