At 8:45 a.m., Salem School students that arrive to school on buses are being held on the buses.

Town of Salem Fire/Rescue personnel are on the scene.

UPDATE 8:58 a.m. — We Energies crew now on scene as well.

UPDATE 9:13 a.m. — Students being let off buses and entering school. Salem F/R units clearing the scene.

UPDATE 10:12 a.m. — From David Milz, district administrator: “There was an odor of natural gas detected during morning arrival. This odor was in the north kitchen and cafeteria area. For precautionary measures we contacted We Energies and the fire department.  We were given the go ahead from the fire department to keep the students on the south end of the building (south cafeteria, south gym, etc.). We also were in contact with Dousman Bus Service in the event we needed to evacuate the building or transport offsite. There were no leaks detected and we were given clearance to return to the classrooms.  Our staff did a great job of monitoring the students. The behavior of the students was outstanding.”
