The Kenosha County Aging & Disability Resource Center will provide free, confidential memory screening and information about community resources on Nov. 10. The event is part of National Memory Screening Day, an annual initiative of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America during November, National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month.
The Alzheimer’s Foundation urges screening for anyone concerned about memory changes, at risk of Alzheimer’s disease due to family history or who wants to check their memory now for future comparison. Warning signs of dementia include forgetting people’s names and events, asking repetitive questions, loss of verbal or written skills, confusion over daily routines, and erratic mood swings.
Some memory problems can be readily treated, such as those caused by vitamin deficiencies or thyroid problems. In general, the earlier the diagnosis, the easier it is to treat memory loss. Screening results are not a diagnosis, and individuals who have concerns are encouraged to pursue a full medical exam.
The memory screenings will be offered at the ADRC, 8600 Sheridan Road, Entrance D, Room S9, from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. The screenings take 5 – 10 minutes. No appointment is necessary. For more information please call the ADRC at 262-605-6646.
