Rep. Samantha Kerkman (R-Salem) with members of the Kenosha area legislative colleagues, hosted the family and close friend of the late Lt. Scott Schumacher during the Assembly floor session Tuesday, Oct. 20.

Lt. Schumacher, of Trevor, known as “Schu,” was posthumously honored as a Hometown Hero for a life of service, bravery, and generosity. He passed away on Feb. 25, 2015 from a cancer prevalent in firefighting.

The Hometown Hero Award program seeks to identify and recognize individuals around the state who give of themselves to make a difference in our communities and in the lives of those around them. Recipients are people whose care and concern for others causes them to unconditionally intervene, mentor, or lend a hand wherever needed.

Rep. Samantha Kerkman (R-Salem) was joined by Rep. Peter Barca (D-Kenosha), Rep. Tod Ohnstad (D-Kenosha), as well, state Sen. Van Wanggaard (R-Racine) in nominating Lt. Schumacher for the Hometown Hero Award.  Attending the ceremony were: Kristine Schumacher, Lt. Schumacher’s widow; Don and Barb Schumacher, his parents; Laura Gaylord, his sister; Kenosha Fire Battalion Chief Matthew Haerter, colleague and lifelong friend; and Rocco LaMaccia, Kenosha Alderperson.

“…It takes someone special to pursue a career where every day is literally a battle between life and death. It takes an outstandingly generous person to put one’s life on the line to save a stranger. It takes an individual much like the person Lt. Scott Schumacher was to make this world a better place,” remarked Rep. Kerkman.
