The Survivors of Suicide Support group will take place on Tuesdays from 6-7:30 p.m. at Piasecki Althaus Family Services Center located at 2002 52nd St., Kenosha.
Each year over 41,000 people die by suicide in the U.S., and over 1 million die worldwide. Kenosha County has lost over 350 people to suicide since 2000 and every one of the deaths is survived by loved ones and friends. A survivor is defined as a family member or friend of a person who died by suicide. For some survivors, this support group will be the first time they will share the grief, reach out for support and support others. The important thing for survivors to know is they are not alone.
The groups are facilitated by a certified grief and loss coach, Charlie Hansen. The meeting dates are as follows:
- Aug. 11 and 25.
- Sept. 8 and 22.
- Oct. 13 and 27.
- Nov.10 and 24.
Here are some topics that will be covered:
- Why did this happen? Why didn’t I know?
- Sorting out all those feelings of guilt, anger, being ashamed- how to cope.
- How to remember your loved one by how they lived, not only how they died.
- Healing your hurt by sharing your story with others.
- Everyone’s grief is not the same, nor does healing happen at the same time.
- Overcoming the stigma of suicide. What to say to friends, family and co-workers.
