Silver Lake should have a fireworks display this summer, but when and by who is still undecided.

Trustee Roger Johnson, chairman of the General Welfare, Buildings, Public Works, Parks, Public Lands & Library Committee, said at Wednesday’s regular board meeting that money was budgeted for fireworks this year, but there are a few uncertainties yet.

“There’s going to be fireworks,” Johnson said. “I can’t tell you when yet.”

Johnson pointed out that he only assumed responsibility for this committee after the April election. He is finding that most fireworks companies are already committed for this summer. He is hoping to work something out with the same company that is doing the Westosha Kiwanis Club fireworks display in Paddock Lake on July 3.

Fireworks in the village, once an annual event, have become an on again, off again proposition in recent years. Silver Lake Citizens For Growth spearheaded raising funds for fireworks for a number of years, when other funds dried up, but that group has disbanded due to a lack of volunteer help.

Village President Bruce Nopenz said he would like to see fireworks become an annual event again.

“It would be nice for residents to know on the Fourth of July, there’s going to be fireworks,” Nopenz said.
