The Board of Directors of the Kenosha Community Foundation announced that Michael Kurzer, Westosha Central High School, is among the Kenosha County high school seniors that are recipients of the Herman and Virginia Gundlach Scholarships.
These students will each receive a $3,000 scholarship. Each plans to attend a four-year college or university in Wisconsin as a full time student.
The Gundlach family (Herman Gundlach died in 1996 preceding his wife, Virginia who died in 1978) firmly believed in the virtues of education and in 1995 established the scholarship fund based on his belief that “the scholarship should be for only the first year of college – a chance to get a good start.”
Since 2004, the Kenosha Community Foundation has awarded 113 Gundlach scholarships, totaling over $140,000 to Kenosha area students.
Executive Director Robert Schneider also announced that the Community Foundation is now accepting applications for the Foundation’s Cropley Scholarship.
“We invite Kenosha County residents who are currently attending college to apply for our Cropley Scholarships,” said Schneider. The scholarships were established the late Ward Cropley, the former head of classified advertising at the Kenosha News, and his wife Jesse Cropley.
To be eligible for the Kenosha Community Foundation’s Cropley Scholarship, an applicant must:
- Be a resident of Kenosha County.
- Be an undergraduate enrolled at an accredited college/university and have completed at least one
- year of study.
- Have a minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA) out of 4.0.
- Submit a scholarship application form.

“All academic majors can apply, but note that this is a needs-based scholarship, so verification of the applicant’s financial need will be required prior to making the scholarship award,” says Schneider.
Deadline for applications is July 15, 2015. Recipients of the Foundation’s Cropley Scholarship will be announced later this summer.
Ward Cropley established the scholarship endowment fund to provide financial assistance to “needy and worthy students, who are desirous of and ambitious to receive a college, university, or other higher education, and who without financial assistance, would be unable to acquire such college, university or higher education.”
“The Kenosha Community Foundation’s Board of Directors, in keeping with Ward Cropley’s intentions, decided to use the income from the fund to provide one-year scholarships to currently enrolled college students in financial need to help them continue and/or complete their education” says Schneider. “In 2015, we want to award at least two students with the Foundation’s Cropley Scholarship, and each student could receive up to $5,000.”
The number and amount of the Foundation’s Cropley Scholarships to be awarded each year will be determined by the Kenosha Community Foundation’s Board of Directors and based on the size and growth of the fund.
