Bluebirds are starting to build nests to raise their young for this year, and a local birder will reveal how to attract them to your yard.

Rick Fare, education committee chair for Hoy Audubon of Kenosha and Racine Counties, will describe the life of the Eastern Bluebird and related topics at a 10 a.m., Saturday, April 11 presentation at Hawthorn Hollow Nature Sanctuary and Arboretum, 880 Green Bay Road, Somers.

There is a $9 fee for Hawthorn Hollow members — $14 for non-members — for the two and a-half hour session. Registration can be completed online at www.hawthornhollow.org/classes/bird-lover-series; scroll to the page bottom.

Fare, who oversees two trails with 52 bluebird nest boxes total, said proper placement of bluebird nest boxes has the best chance of pulling the songbirds into a yard. The ideal location would be surrounded by short grasses, have places for the birds to perch, and a nearby tree for the chicks to fly to when fledging from the nest box, he said.

Good predator control also is important, Fare said.

Monitors are needed in this area to help check on nest boxes and report activity, he said.

After the presentation, Fare will lead a short tour of Hawthorn Hollow’s bluebird trail.
