The Paddock Lake Village Board is expected to increase the rate for users of its water utility by 3 percent at its regular monthly meeting Monday.
Village President Terry Burns said this is the fifth straight year the rate has been increased for the utility, which serves about 330 customers on the east side of the village.
The 3 percent increase is one that is likely to be approved by the Public Service Commission, Burns said.
Regular increases are necessary because the system already does not cover its own costs and is subsidized by other village funds.
The alternative to the 3 percent increase would be to have the PSC do a full rate study, a process which Burns speculated could lead to massive increases of the rate — perhaps as high as 90 percent.
Residents and businesses in the rest of the village have private wells.
