Salem has received recognition for creating a monarch butterfly friendly habitat in a natural part of Community Park.

Boy Scout Evan Kirsch on Monday presented the Town Board with a certificate from Monarch Watch,  a nonprofit education, conservation, and research program based at the University of Kansas that focuses on the monarch butterfly, its habitat, and its fall migration. The certificate recognized the town for creating a waystation (#9190) for migrating monarch butterflies.

Kirsch coordinated the creation of the habitat as an Eagle Scout project. The work included clearing the ground and then planting with species attractive and useful to monarch butterflies.

Though the town received the recognition, Chairman Diann Tesar said Kirsch deserved the credit.

“We would have never done this without Evan,” Tesar said.
