At the prompting of Town Board members, Salem town staff will be looking into how neighboring municipalities handle allowing parking on streets.
Supervisor Mike Culat raised the issue at the Committee of the Whole meeting Monday night. It was said that parking often becomes a problem for family gatherings and such , when residents have multiple guests over and driveways fill-up.
Current town ordinances ban all on-street parking on town roads, said town administrator Patrick Casey.
While acknowledging that the issue might get complicated, some supervisors were enthusiastically in favor of exploring the issue.
“I think we should have one side parking,” said Supervisor Ted Kmiec. “If you have parking on one side, you at least are controlling it.”
But all town roads are not created equal and that could mean determining whether parking could be allowed on a case-by-case basis, officials acknowledged.
“You’ve got a lot of issues here,” Tesar said.
Casey pointed out that “the nice thing about the existing ordinance is that it is black and white.”
In the end the board directed staff to research how parking is regulated in other nearby municipalities.
