Students earn recognition in Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Our long winter froze about everything but the imaginations and talents of Central High School senior Garrison Asma, junior Maria Salerno, freshmen Victoria Salerno and Sarah Verzal, as well as 8th-grader Sally Windler–all Gold Key medalists for the Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Garrison won in the category of Senior Writing Portfolio (“No Heroes, Please”); Maria, in Memoir (“Thawing a Heart of Snow”); Victoria, in Science/Fiction Fantasy (“The Gray”); Sarah, in both Poetry (“Waves” and “The Fantasizer”) and in Memoir (“Under the Windy City,” for which she won Silver Key); and Sally, in Journalism (“Have We Forgotten?”).

Silver Key winners include the following students from Wheatland: Alana Bell, in Short Story (“The Missing Gift”); Kayli Humphrey, in Flash Fiction (“10 Creepy Kids”); Chelsea Lamp, in Flash Fiction (“The Butcher”); Emma Olson, in Poetry (“13 Ways to Look at a Serpent”); Montana Peterson, in Science Fiction/Fantasy (“The Mystery Village”); Sam Serak, in Poetry (“The Day We’ll Never Forget”); and Sally Windler, in Dramatic Script (“I Steal”). From Brighton School, Alex Salerno won a Silver Key for his memoir “A Near Miss.”

Students receiving Honorable Mention, also from Wheatland, include Edie Keung, in Flash Fiction (“Basement”); Michala Ohlrich, in Poetry (“Love Stinks,” “My Love,” “Pain,” “To Lose What We Had,” and “Undeniable Love”); and Sam Serak, in Poetry (“Question Mark”).

In addition, Asma’s senior portfolio was awarded a Silver Medal at Nationals.
