A new gun and ammunition store in Twin Lakes appeared to get the nod from the Village Board at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

The store will be operated by Derek Goodson out of part of the former Stan’s Lumber retail store building at 206B East Main Street.

The village Plan Commission met last week on the request to operate the gunsmith and retail gun shop  as a quasi-permitted use. The commission developed the following conditions to allowing the business to operate:

  • Strict adherence to ATF, state and local requirements,
  • All weapons will be locked when on the premises.
  • Proper storage of ammunition and ammunition components.
  • Storage of weapons in a proper secured location with police chief approval.
  • Full security system with remote monitoring and including motion sensors and cameras in the security system.
  • No on-site discharge of weapons/no firing range.
  • Know Box on outside of building.
  • Addition of dead bolt to both entrance doors.
  • Front access doors opened by interior remote only, to be locked at all times.
  • No loaded weapons to be in the store.
  • Police review and approval of security system and measures prior to stocking and opening.
  • Pass fire inspections.
  • No firearms in showroom after business hours.

Police Chief Dale Racer said he toured the building with its owner and Goodson and found the planned provisions for securing the store’s stock to be sufficient if followed.

No audience members spoke about the proposal. No board member expressed opposition. Trustees Sharon Bower and Jeremy Knoll were absent

The matter will likely come before the board at a regular meeting for a final vote.
