Crash victim identified as Racine man

The person who died in a crash on the I-94 southbound off ramp at Highway 50 yesterday afternoon has been identified as John M. Punak, 25, of Racine, a Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department spokesman said Thursday morning.

From a statement released by the Sherff’s Department:

… Witnesses have come forward confirming seeing the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. One witness said that prior to the crash the driver appeared to be “distressed”. If there are other witnesses who have more information regarding this crash, the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department Detective Bureau would appreciate any additional information (262-605-5102). At this time we do not believe this to be anything but a tragic accident, but want to make sure the investigation is thorough, given that a direct cause of the crash is not evident. Toxicology tests will be performed, as is customary in traffic fatalities.

The crash was reported at about 1:40 p.m. Wednesday. A statement from the Sheriff’s Department said the 2006 Mercury Milan Punak was driving was traveling southbound on the I-94 exit ramp for Highway 50 when at the intersection of the off ramp with 71st Street the vehicle struck a traffic light pole. The collision crushed the vehicle and killed Punak.
