The Twin Lakes Village board is considering a change to its ordinance governing the sale of beer and hard liquor at convenience stores and supermarkets that would make the cut off for all alcohol sales 9 p.m.

The current ordinance sets a 9 p.m. cut-off for hard liquor sales and midnight for beer sales at Class A liquor license holders.

The change, if enacted, would not effect taverns.

Police Chief Dale Racer proposed the change after a recent incident in which a local Class A license holder was found in violation of liquor selling regulations by state agents. The agents suggested the change to Racer, who said he found it is very common to have the proposed hours in municipalities throughout the state.

Racer said he felt the consistency would make liquor sales easier to monitor, but that was challenged by Trustee Kevin Fitzgerald.

“What’s the difference?” Fitzgerald said. “We just moved the clock. Now you have three more hours to monitor it.”

The discussion occurred at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, therefore no vote was taken on the issue.

Racer said he also would like to introduce progressively higher tiers of fines for liquor license violations.
