Lake Knolls Association wins approval for beer and wine at picnic at Bayview Park

The Lake Knolls Civic Association was granted permission by the Randall Town Board Thursday to hold  a picnic in Bayview Park with beer and wine served.

Typically alcohol is not allowed in town parks.

However, the board unanimously approved (Supervisor Robert Gehring was absent) a request from former Supervisor Ken Mangold on behalf of the association to make a one-day exception.

Mangold explained the association has long held a one-day street party during the summer. For that event, the association typically asked for a street to be blocked off. Beer and wine was served at that event as well.

But this year the group was seeking to make the event a picnic and create more of a family atmosphere, including the move to the park, Mangold said.

The goal was to provide “a pleasant gathering for the community,” Mangold said.

Chairman Bob Stoll said he checked with the town’s insurance carrier and found the town was not insured for events including alcohol in its parks. However, an organization hosting such an event could provide that insurance for itself and the town.

Mangold said the association would provide the insurance including documentation for the town.

The town’s approval was contingent on receiving the insurance certification. The board also stated that others wanting to use the park or access boats docked there that day could not be impeded.

The event is planned for June 15.

“I like the idea of getting it off the street,” Stoll said.

Nothing makes it more of a family atmosphere than BEER & WINE! I’m not complaining about the decision, not even against it, I just think that’s pretty funny. Interesting reasoning.
