Sarah Verzal, an eighth-grade student at Wheatland Center School, has earned a National Gold Medal in the 2013 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for her poem “Variable.”

She will be honored onstage for this achievement at the world-famous Carnegie Hall in New York City on May 31.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the country’s longest-running award program for creative teenagers, honors fewer than 1 percent of over 230,000 entries with national recognition. Verzal is the only middle school writer from Wisconsin this year to achieve this distinction. Her language arts teacher, Rachel Ryan Hartley, has also been recognized with an award.
