Kenosha County is seeking a grant from the state Department of Natural Resources to expand KD Park.

The 97 acres is located just west of the park in Wheatland and Randall. That location is the key feature that makes new property attractive for acquisition, said Jon Rudie, General Manager of Park Operations for Kenosha County.

“Opportunities to purchase land adjoining an existing park are rare,” Rudie said.

The new land includes upland forest mixed in with agricultural fields and a rolling topography and has not been mined out, Rudie said. Most of the existing KD Park was once a quarry.

” It is well to suited outdoor recreation,” Rudie said of the new land.

The grant is part of the Acquisition and Development of Local Parks sub-program of the Knowles-Nelson Stewardshipa DNR press release said. The county would have to make a 50 percent match under the grant program, effectively splitting the cost with the stewardship, if the grant is approved.

Public written comments on the proposed acquisition can be mailed to Julie Sauer, Administrator, Division of Customer and Employee Services, in care of Dan Kaemmerer, Community Services Specialist, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources – Southeast Region, 2300 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Milwaukee, WI, 53212 or sent by email toDan.Kaemmerer@Wisconsin.Gov . If you have questions about this project Dan Kaemmerer can be reached by phone at (414) 263-8704. Written comments will be accepted through December 26, 2012.
