Effective Oct. 1 Health Department will not be able to provide vaccines to fully insured

The Kenosha County Health Department has made the following announcement regarding immunizations:

The Wisconsin Immunization Program was not granted an extension by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the implementation of the 317 vaccine policy change that prevents the use of federally funded vaccine to immunize individuals whose insurance covers the cost of vaccine. Beginning October 1, 2012, fully insured individuals whose insurance covers immunizations will not be able to be immunized with state supplied vaccine (i.e., federally purchased 317 vaccine), even if the insurance includes a high deductible or co-pay, or the plan’s deductible has not been met, at local health departments. Making sure that children of all ages receive all their vaccinations on time is one of the most important things that can be done to ensure children’s long-term health-as well as the health of friends, classmates, and others in the community. Immunization is the best way to protect children from 16 potentially harmful, sometimes deadly, diseases. Children in Wisconsin are required to be vaccinated against diseases like measles and whooping cough before they can enter school. The Kenosha County Division of Health encourages parents to make sure that their children are upto-date on their immunizations and to bring them in now if they need vaccines. Parents should be aware that beginning October 1, 2012, children whose insurance covers immunizations will not be able to receive vaccines at the Kenosha County Division of Health. They will need to visit their primary health care provider for their immunizations and the health department encourages parents to plan ahead to ensure their children are fully vaccinated during this back-to-school time. If you are unable to secure an appointment with your health care provider, you may still bring them in to your local health department before October 1, 2012 to receive needed immunizations. Uninsured children and those eligible (Badger Care) for the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program can continue to receive their immunizations at their local health department or from a private health care provider.
