The Silver Lake Village Board agreed Wednesday night to pursue leasing a new squad car and purchase new radar guns for the police department
The department has three cars. The oldest, an Impala, is the one that will be replaced.
Trustee David Snow recommended pursuing a lease of a Ford police Interceptor V6 all wheel drive squad, which will come fully outfitted for police work except for the exterior markings. The vehicle will cost $27,000.
The department has been purchasing Dodge squad cars, but Snow recommended the change to Ford after maintenance and repair problems with the Dodges have developed. Snow said the village has spent about $16,000 in repairs on the police vehicles this year.
When the lease expires, the village will have the option of purchasing the car for $1.
Snow said he also would like to budget to replace one squad each four years in the hope that repairs do not continue to be such a large part of the village budget.
The Village Board also approved the purchase of three new radar units for the department.
The village will use a $4,000 Click It or Ticket grant to pay for the units. The village will have to contribute a $237 match.
The new units will be able to work in both static and moving situations, Snow said.
