Salem passes electric motors only ordinance for Rock Lake

The Salem Town Board adopted an ordinance Monday designating Rock Lake as electric motor use only, except in a few specified exceptions.

The board voted unanimously for the ordinance. It was extensively discussed last month and agreed upon in concept then.

However there was a last minute change suggested by Supervisor Dennis Faber. He suggested that shore preservation operations be added to the list of allowed uses for a gasoline motor. The suggestion was included in the adopted ordinance. Other exemptions to the rule include plant treatment, harvesting and salvage operations.

The new rule will not effect the already in place no-wake rule for the entire lake, which is a state regulation for a a lake the size of Rock Lake, town officials said.
