The Twin Lakes Village Board authorized the village clerk to designate alternate polling places as needed.
The action came at a special meeting Monday.
Village Clerk Kathleen Richardson had asked for the authority in anticipation of large turnouts for recall and presidential elections later this year.
Voting normally takes place at Village Hall in the meeting room. But when there is large turnout the room is inadequate due to its limited capacity, Richardson said. That can force voters to be crowded when inside and stand outside while waiting to vote.
The first choice for an alternate location for an election for which large turnout is expected would be the Lakewood School gym, Richardson said. The Twin Lakes Fire Station also was considered, but has accessibility problems.
Village Board members seemed enthusiastic about the suitability for the school gym and unanimously approved granting the authority to Richardson.
The board members also discussed various ways to publicize the change in polling places when it is instituted.
Voting in smaller elections will still be held at Village Hall.
