Units responding for fire alarm at Central High School

Salem Fire/Rescue equipment stages outside Central High School while firefighters investigate a fire alarm and report of light smoke there.

At 6:41 p.m., Salem Fire/Rescue units and sheriff’s deputies are responding to a report of a supervisory fire alarm at Central High School, Paddock Lake.

UPDATE 6:49 p.m. — Dispatch reports light smoke being seen inside building and power is out.

UPDATE 6:51 p.m. — Fire command at scene reports that personnel is investigating. No signs of fire showing outside. Building appears to be evacuated.

UPDATE — From Salem Fire/Rescue Chief David Slover: “There was a malfunction in an emergency generator transfer switch.  For some reason power was interrupted at the school and the generator detected it needed to start but the transfer switch malfunctioned and damaged some wiring within the box itself.  No fire, no damage to the school except the switch.  Everything, the alarm system, maintenance staff, and administration at the school worked as it was supposed to.”
