Central boys basketball regional report: CHA falls to Oregon 72-38

Monday night saw the Falcons visiting the Panthers in the Regional final. The overflow loud crowd saw the opening quarter open with a 5 point lead by Nate Benson with a 3 and a steal and a layup. After cental had 2 shots rattle out and 2 missed layups Oregon kept pushing the pace to open a 10-0 lead with 4:43 in the quarter. Dalton Sjong broke the scoreless streak with 2 freebies and a 3 from deep on the left wing. Mike Michelau got 5 points also with a 3 pointer and a layup to cut the deficit to 5. The quarter ended with an airball by Oregon that they rebounded and got a layup at the buzzer leading 17 – 10

UPDATE Second quarter — The Falcons came out on fire to start the quarter a layup by Jason Castona and a 3 by Sjong and a 2 by Michelau to trail 19 – 17. However the couldn’t convert on a number of short shots and saw them only score another points the rest of the quarter to trail 28 -20 at the half.

UPDATE Third quarter — Third quarter saw Central falling behind 35 – 22 with 4 minutes left behind the scoring of Dan Schwartz hitting from in close and deep. After a tight defense by Oregon the Falcons fell behind 45 – 27 after another long 3 by Schwartz to end the quarter.

UPDATE Fourth quarter — The fourth quarter saw more of the same. Oregon making a majority of their shots and layups, Central trying to force the action and shots to fall back 57 – 30 at 4:15 in the game. Both coaches emptied their benches the rest of the way with Oregon winning 72 – 38. Oregon was led by Schwartz with 21, Benson with 17 Solberg with 14. Central was led by Sjong with 22, Michelau 10.
