Boaters who like to make a wake on Camp Lake may have a little more time to do so as the result of preliminary action by the Salem Town Board Monday.
The board voted 3 to 2 to set new no wake hours of sunset to 10 a.m. seven days a week.
That changes last year’s hours of no wake between the hours of sunset and 10 a.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and between the hours of 7 p.m. and 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday either in the shore zone or the traffic lane.
Representatives of the Camp/Center Lake Rehabilitation District presented results of a recent survey conducted by the district that showed no large consensus for any one option. The district sent our 1,700 surveys and received 69 responses. The representatives recommended keeping the 2011 hours another year.
However, a vote by the Town Board for extending the 2011 hours failed by a 2 to 3 vote. Supervisors Patrick O’Connell and Dennis Faber (who also is a CCLRD commissioner) voted for the extension, with Supervisors Ted Kmiec and Dan Campion opposing it. Chairman Diann Tesar broke the tie by voting against the extension.
Campion then moved to adopt no wake hours of sunset to 10 a.m. seven days a week. That measure passed with Campion, Kmiec and Tesar voting for and O’Connell and Faber opposed.
The board will still need to formally pass the ordinance next month.
