Sixth grade students competed in the first ever Readathlon at Salem Grade School on Friday, Jan. 27.
After competing in triathlons for many years, 6th grade reading teacher, Mindy Stewart, decided to bring triathlon into her classroom. Over 100 students competed in three main reading events to mimic the three main events in a triathlon.
With the help of parent volunteers, each student read for accuracy, expression, and fluency. To mimic the transitions of a triathlon the students answered comprehension questions. The students competed as individuals and as teams. After the students completed the three main events and two transitions, all of their points were totaled.
Individual top finishers were Logan Sperling, first place; Ryan Sperling, second place; and Matthew Quist, third place.
The winning teams were 1st Place-White, 2nd Place-Purple, 3rd Place-Orange.
